Troubleshooting • Audio Problems with RP4

Hello,

Long-time fan of your product. It's been working great for over three years! However, I am now struggling with an audio problem. I was hoping I could explain what's happening and see if a tech could make any suggestions.

My arcade cabinet has a Raspberry Pi 4, TCL TV and speakers connected through optical cord. I haven't changed anything on the system in several months, software wise. When I turn it on, the video and audio preview of the first game pops up. But when I move the joystick down to the next game, audio cuts out. Video is fine. If I turn the TV off and on, sound comes back for a short period of time, then goes silent again. I've already had multiple conversations with the Retropie guys and they can't find anything wrong software wise. To confirm it's not a software problem, I found a backup from three years ago. Put that in and the same thing happened. Loss of sound.

I also have a gaming PC connected to my setup. I never have this problem with the PC. So I can't see how it can be the tv and/or speakers.

I'm very frustrated. I've been troubleshooting this for three weeks now. I've swapped out every HDMI cable, including the micro HDMI cable. Nothing fixes the problem. Plugging the micro HDMI cable into the second HDMI port on the Pi has no display at all.

At this point, it has to be the Pi correct? I just can't figure out what else it could be. I would very much appreciate any help/ideas anyone has before trying to order a replacement RP4.

Thank you!
