Troubleshooting • RPi 3 B v1.2 ( 2015 ) with more modern OS ?

Hello,

I've had an RPi 3 B v1.2 for years. Never needed it for anything, so after the first flush of excitement it got put in a drawer and forgotten.

Now at last I have a real use for it !.

The SD card in it was a 16Gb, and that powers up nicely to Debian 'Stretch', and runs the desktop and apps fine, but I want to run a newer OS.

I got some new SD cards, 32Gb and 64Gb for the job. I tried the Raspberry Imager v1.8.5, and that seemed to write the cards OK, but they didn't run in the RPi itself. I then tried Balena Etcher, but still the SD cards won't run in the RPi.

Thinking there maybe a problem with SD card slot on my laptop, I installed Imager and Etcher on a different, newer, laptop. I turned off folder protection and ran as administrator, but still no joy. I tried different images from Imager, such as Lite, Full, Legacy, and even non-RPi stuff like Ubuntu, but they all fail to run.

Then I tried a external USB SD card writer. Using this on the RPi running from the 16Gb card, I could copy the existing OS to the USB 32Gb or 64Gb cards, and these then behaved just like my original 16Gb, so I know my cards are OK.

Is the RPi 3 Model B v1.2 capable of running a more modern OS ?

The 16Gb card still works fine, ( I don't want to change that ), and the red LED is on solid.

I'm at my wits end !.

Can anyone give me some help ?.

Cheers,
