I am planning a wall-mounted room/info panel using a Raspberry Pi 5. I am looking for a touch display with a suitable enclosure, or proven enclosure/backbox solutions.
Requirements:
- Display size: 7-13 inch (ideally 10.1 inch or 13.3 inch)
- Capacitive touch, robust (glass preferred)
- Wall mount: cables/connectors should go to the rear into a backbox if possible (side-facing ports are not ideal)
- Network/power: PoE (48V), either via a PoE HAT or an internal PoE splitter mounted in the enclosure/backbox
- Raspberry Pi 5 should sit behind the display (inside the backbox), not externally
- Software: devices run balenaOS (container setup, e.g. Chromium kiosk)
- LED status indicator (LED strip/light frame) for states like free/occupied/check-in (diffused, even light, not glaring)
- Operation: panels are powered off at night and powered on again every day
Questions:
1) Which display models (HDMI+USB touch vs DSI) work reliably with Raspberry Pi 5 and are mechanically wall-friendly?
2) Are there displays/cases where cable routing is not side-facing and works well with a backbox?
3) What backbox depth is realistic if Pi + PoE (HAT/splitter) should fit neatly behind the display?
4) Any advice on cooling/heat management (Pi 5 + touch display in a closed enclosure)?
5) For the LED solution: what hardware approach is proven (diffused strip in aluminum profile, GPIO vs controller) and how to integrate it cleanly?
6) Any best practices for daily power-off/power-on in a balenaOS setup (e.g. power cut via PoE) to keep things stable long-term?
Concrete model recommendations and real-world examples (photos/sketches) would be greatly appreciated.
