Automation, sensing and robotics • Seeking Advice: How to Protect a Flat Ribbon Cable for Outdoor Use

Hi everyone,

I’m working on a Raspberry Pi project that requires the use of a 40-pin flat ribbon cable to connect the GPIO pins to external components. However, I need to deploy this setup in an outdoor environment, and I’m concerned about protecting the ribbon cable from the elements (e.g., rain, humidity, UV exposure, and mechanical wear). My Raspberry Pi is powered by a battery in a waterproof box.

So far, I’ve considered the following solutions:

Heat Shrink Tubing: Covering the entire ribbon cable with a large heat shrink tube to seal it.

Well-Protected Cable Conduits: Using a flexible plastic conduit to shield the cable from UV and physical damage.

Waterproof Enclosure: Placing all connections and exposed areas in a weatherproof box.

Liquid Electrical Tape or Coating: Applying a protective layer of liquid insulation to seal the cable.

Before I proceed, I’d like to hear from anyone who has experience using flat ribbon cables outdoors.

Any tips, suggestions, or lessons learned would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance for your help!
